THE MIND OF AN ATHLETE
Many hours of practice wires the brain pathways specifically for the physical demands of a sport. However, focusing on rewiring the nervous system and reducing stress in the body is just as important for athletes to function at peak physical performance. The brain needs to be clear so that the athlete can shift their breath of attention without distraction. Is the typical athlete’s brain wired for peace, calm, and focus? No. Are you an athlete who’s mental health and physical ability are both working at peak performance? Or could you benefit from a steadier and more focused mind?
Our experiences and the coping mechanisms we’ve developed throughout our lives establish automatic coping responses in the brain. These responses often cloud the brain and ultimately impede focus.
If one athlete is functioning with a calm and focused presence, and the other is operating with the inherent stress of the sport unchecked, then they are at a significant disadvantage. Mental and emotional strength is the crucial piece that differentiates between elite and average performers.
